I would like to say that I am starting this new year on my best foot, but I am feeling a little under the weather. I will just have a restart in a few days when I am back up to par. And no, there was no crazy party last night so it is not the result of that either!
It’s definitely crazy that the holiday season is all but boxed up and back on the shelves until next year. Where does the time go? Now it is on to the land of resolutions, new goals and a wide open space full of possibility.
The one thing I think we can all agree on is that at the end of the holidays, we need a reset on things. We get out of our routines, out of our good habits and often our bodies are ready to get back to normal. I for one like to kick up my greens intake in the new year so I certainly find myself making a lot of smoothies around this time of year. It’s one of my favorite ways to add those greens and boost my nutrient intake.
I was looking into foods that help detox the body and get rid of some of the junk I have been holding onto. From the list I found a lot of goodies including goji berries, brazil nuts, avocados, ginger, beets, apples, lemons and more. And wouldn’t it be great to get as many of these in your system at once?
I opted to leave out the beets, or the smoothie would not be so green at all. I used brazil nuts, but you can also sub almonds or leave nuts out if you are allergic. In reality, getting lots of green leafy veggies and whole foods into your system is the way to find balance again. This smoothie will just help you get there a bit quicker perhaps!
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 1 banana frozen
- 1/4 c raw brazil nuts
- 1/4 lemon I included the peel
- 1/2 apple sliced (I usually use Fuji, Gala or Granny Smith)
- 1-2 large handful baby spinach
- 1-2 large handful kale stems removed
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 1 T flax seeds
- 1 - 1 1/2 c water
In a high powered blender, combine water, kale and spinach. Use just 1 cup to start and add more later. Blend until smooth.
Add all other ingredients and blend on high until smooth, add more water if necessary.
Enjoy immediately or refrigerate until ready to drink.
Add more greens if you like! The more the merrier!
This smoothie will be 1-2 servings depending on whether it is as a meal or for a snack.
