Hummus lovers will LOVE this sweet chocolate version in this brownie batter hummus recipe. If you are trying to add some more beans into your life, this is a super fun way.

If you love this dip, you will want to try these White Bean Double Chocolate Brownies as well!

Why You Will Love This Brownie Batter Hummus:

  • It tastes like brownie batter! Whether you use tahini or peanut butter in this brownie batter hummus, the chocolate flavor is unbeatable. Did Mom tell you not to eat the brownie batter so your wouldn’t get sick from the egg or flour? None of that in this recipe!
  • You can make it in under 10 minutes. Blend everything in a food processor or blender and adjust the sweetness and thickness to your liking. That is it!
  • A great way to add beans into your diet. If you want to get some beans in, it’s a lot more delicious when it involves chocolate!
  • Uses lots of pantry basics. Garbanzo beans, cocoa powder, nut butter or tahini, maple, brown sugar and a few other things. If you are like me, you always have a random can of beans that needs to be used NOW. Chickpeas tend to be that for me so a bit of chocolate hummus is the way to go for me!

Ingredients and Substitutions:

  • chickpeas: garbanzo beans are obviously key to this recipe, but if you don’t have any, a black bean or white bean like a cannellini bean will work as well. Make sure they are pre-cooked and rinsed.
  • cocoa powder: unsweetened, regular cocoa powder. You could use a dark cocoa for a dark chocolate hummus if preferred.
  • peanut butter or tahini: Tahini is a base ingredient in classic hummus. First, it’s not a pantry staple for everyone, and second, it’s not everyone’s favorite flavor. So this brownie batter hummus can be made with either. Tahini is a bit thinner so it will adjust the amount of milk you may need when whipping this up.
  • maple syrup: I use two sweeteners in this chocolate hummus. Maple is the liquid sweetener. You will need some form of liquid sweetener. Honey or agave will work as well, they will just change the flavor a bit.
  • brown sugar: I find this to be the key to this hummus recipe. The brown sugar adds a richness to this dip that is unlike other chocolate hummus recipes. I advise you not to skip it. Coconut sugar could be subbed, but nothing is like brown sugar to me!
  • vanilla: A good amount of vanilla for this recipe. 1 1/2 teaspoon, but you could use up to 2
  • sea salt: a touch for a nice flavor
  • milk: any milk you prefer. This helps thin out the hummus to the right texture, or however you prefer it. Almond milk, soy milk, whole milk, skim milk–use what you have on hand!

How To Make This Brownie Batter Hummus Recipe:

Making this chocolate brownie batter hummus is a piece of cake!

Add all of the ingredients into a food processor or blender. My food processor doesn’t get this hummus as smooth as my blender so if you are wanting this extra smooth, opt for a high powered blender like a Vitamix.

When you start making this, add a couple of tablespoons of milk and hold off on the rest until the end. Blend or process well until smooth, scraping down the sides if needed.

Once the mixture is fairly smooth, add more milk to thin it out a bit. Add more sweetener if desired.

Chill for about 30 minutes before serving with any of the fun dippers!

Recipe Tips:

  • For super creamy hummus, remove the skins from the chickpeas. This is a bit tedious, but there are some shortcuts to remove the skins here. I typically don’t take the time to do it, but when I do, the end product is so much smoother and creamier.
  • Storage tips: you can keep your brownie batter hummus in a sealed container in the refrigerator for about one week. Allow it to sit out for about 5-10 minutes before serving to take the chill off a bit. You can freeze this recipe for up to 3 months. Thaw before serving.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your liking. The sweetness of this chocolate hummus is always a personal preference. You can easily adjust the sweetness after blending so you can start small and then add more int he end.

Things To Dip In Your Chocolate Hummus:

Lots of options here! To be fair, this brownie batter hummus is best eaten as you would eat brownie batter–right off the spoon! But here are some other options:

  • fruit: berries, banana slices, apples, and more!
  • chocolate–trust me on this one. Grab a bar of chocolate and get dipping
  • Teddy grahams or graham crackers
  • marshmallows
  • pretzels or chips for sweet and salty. Trader Joe’s plantain chips are killer in this dip
  • dried apricots or dates
  • cookies–Oreos, shortbread cookies, sugar cookies and more

I love your chocolate humus! Followed your recipe and then played with the next batch by subbing raw honey for the maple syrup and using walnut oil. Both were wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

Just wanted to reach out. Your posts are always so touching and real, and I do not have children yet myself, but that is right now by choice. My heart truly breaks, when I hear these kinds of stories. No one can truly get the emotion behind it all, unless they personally went through it themselves. But I witnessed with my own twin sister the struggle and everything she endured to have children. And fortunately in the end, she did have 2 miracle babies. And I give her the utmost Credit, just like yourself for putting yourself through all that. Fertility and all involved is no joke, and she like yourself, only wanted to be a Mother, and was willing to do whatever it took. My point is, don’t give up Hope… Miracles happen every day, and they only stop, once you stop believing in them. Keep your head up and positive outlook on Life, and the pieces will fall when they are ready to fall. I truly hope 2017 is your year, u deserve to finally have!

    1. Lorie says:

Nicole, thank you so much for this. I am so glad to hear about your sister because that just adds to my hope knowing that there will be a light at the end for us. Have a wonderful start to your 2017 as well!!!
