I have a slight obsession with smoothies. I make one almost everyday. There are certainly times that I find myself in a rut and day in and day out I make the same one. Recently I worked on branching out and tried to put together some new combinations.
The beauty of smoothies is that they actually do not have to be some complicated concoction. Sometimes the simpler the better. So I started with three of my basics with this one and then added a couple other ingredients to give it a little boost. And that’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Bananas, spinach, and almond butter. These are my favorite smoothie basics. So many options from there but these are what 95% of my smoothies contain.
Coconut water is often considered nature’s Gatorade. It is packed with electrolytes and has more potassium than a banana. It’s a great addition to smoothies or just as a drink on it’s own. There’s nothing like cracking open a fresh coconut, but that’s not always the most easily accessible! If you are grabbing it from the grocery, just make there is one ingredient: coconut water.
And then the addition of coconut oil into this smoothie just multiplies the benefits by even more so you really can’t go wrong! So simple, but so good. Not sure what this maca powder is? Don’t worry you are not alone. You can usually find it at health food stores. It’s ultimately a flavorless powder made from ground up maca root. It’s great for energy, mood boosting and female health. I just like to add a dose where I can get it.
Now, there is one important thing I learned about smoothies recently. Did you know it is important to “chew” your smoothies? Sounds so strange but it is true. If you suck the drink down, your body’s digestion signals have not been sent out appropriately. The act of chewing is a signal for the body to work to start the digestive process. So the simple action of chewing a couple times with each swig is really doing yourself a favor. If you have a hard time remembering, (it’s second nature to me now after less than a month) stir in some unsweetened shredded coconut for a gentle reminder as you sip. There’s your science lesson for the day! Now it’s time to pull out the blender!
- 3/4 c coconut water
- 1 large frozen banana broken into chunks
- 2 tsp almond butter
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- 2 large handfuls baby spinach
- 1/2 T maca powder
- 1-2 T shredded coconut unsweetened (optional)
- 2-3 ice cubes more as needed
Combine all ingredients into a high blender and blend for about 60 seconds or until smooth.
Add more ice if not thick enough.
For a creamier smoothie, add 1/4 c milk of choice and 1/2 c coconut water instead of the 3/4 c coconut water.
